Scalable pCT Image Reconstruction Delivered as a Cloud Service

We describe a cloud-based medical image reconstruction service designed to meet a real-time and daily demand to reconstruct thousands of images from proton cancer treatment facilities worldwide. Rapid reconstruction of a three-dimensional Proton Computed Tomography (pCT) image can require the transfer of 100 GB of data and use of approximately 120 GPU-enabled compute nodes. The nature of proton therapy means that demand for such a service is sporadic and comes from potentially hundreds of clients worldwide. We thus explore the use of a commercial cloud as a scalable and cost-efficient platform for pCT reconstruction. To address the high performance requirements of this application we leverage Amazon Web Services’ GPU-enabled cluster resources that are provisioned with high performance networks between nodes. To support episodic demand, we develop an on-demand multi-user provisioning service that can dynamically provision and resize clusters based on image reconstruction requirements, priorities, and wait times. We compare the performance of our pCT reconstruction service running on commercial cloud resources with that of the same application on dedicated local high performance computing resources. We show that we can achieve scalable and on-demand reconstruction of large scale pCT images for simultaneous multi-client requests, processing images in less than 10 minutes for less than $10 per image.

IEEE CLOUD is the flagship conference focusing on innovative cloud computing across all “as a service” categories, including Network, Infrastructure, Platform, Software, and Function. It has been a prime international forum for researchers, academics, businesses, industry, and standard bodies to exchange the latest fundamental advances in the state of the art and practice of cloud computing, identify emerging research topics, and define the future of cloud computing (see history).

IEEE International Conference on Web Services (CLOUD) has been a prime international forum for both researchers and industry practitioners to exchange the latest fundamental advances in the state of the art and practice of cloud computing, identify emerging research topics, and define the future of cloud computing.

The 2018 IEEE World Congress on Services (IEEE SERVICES 2018) will be held on July 2-7, 2018 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in San Francisco, California, USA. The scope of the Congress will cover all aspects of innovative services computing and applications, current and emerging. It involves various systems and networking aspects, such as cloud, edge, and Internet-of-Things (IoT), as well as other research and technologies, such as intelligent computing, learning techniques, and big data, including quality factors, such as high performance, security, privacy, dependability, trustworthiness, and cost-effectiveness.

The Congress with the following seven conferences/congresses is solely sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society under the auspice of the Technical Committee on Services Computing (TCSVC). Original manuscripts are invited to submit to these conferences/congresses considered with most suitable from the technical point of view.

The IEEE CLOUD 2018 is the flagship conference, created and owned by IEEE since 2009, focusing on innovative cloud computing across all “as a service” categories, including Network, Infrastructure, Platform, Software, and Function.

Cloud Computing has become a scalable services consumption and delivery platform in the field of Services Computing. The technical foundations of Cloud Computing include Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) and Virtualizations of hardware and software. The goal of Cloud Computing is to share resources among the cloud service consumers, cloud partners, and cloud vendors in the cloud value chain. The resource sharing at various levels results in various cloud offerings such as infrastructure cloud (e.g., hardware, IT infrastructure management), software cloud (e.g. SaaS focusing on middleware as a service, or traditional CRM as a service), application cloud (e.g., Application as a Service, UML modeling tools as a service, social network as a service), and business cloud (e.g., business process as a service).

The technical program of IEEE CLOUD 2018 will include a Research Track, a Work-in-Progress Track, and a dozen of workshops (see history). IEEE CLOUD 2018 invites original papers addressing all aspects of cloud computing technology, systems, applications, and business innovations.

Manuscript Guidelines and Submission Information

Please download the paper template in WORD or LaTeX.

All submitted manuscripts will be peer-reviewed by at least 3 program committee members. Accepted papers (from both tracks and workshops) with confirmed presentation will appear in the conference proceedings published by the IEEE Computer Society Press. The authors of selected papers will be encouraged to submit extended and enhanced versions of their papers to the IEEE Transactions on Services Computing (TSC) and other suitable journals.

Submitted Regular and Workshop Papers will be limited to 8 (IEEE Proceedings style) pages and REQUIRED to be formatted using the IEEE Proceedings template. Submitted Work-in-Progress Papers will be limited to 4 (IEEE Proceedings style) pages. Unformatted papers and papers beyond the page limit may not be reviewed. Electronic submission of manuscripts (in PDF format) is required.

At least one author of each accepted paper is required to register to the conference and present the paper.One Best Paper award and one Best Student Paper award will be granted at CLOUD 2018. The first author of the best student paper must be a full-time student.

Manuscripts should be submitted to the IEEE CLOUD 2018 Paper Submission/Review System powered by EasyChair.org. Full-length papers should be submitted to the Research Track; and short papers be submitted to the Work-in-Progress Track. When submitting a full-length paper, one should select either the Main Track, or one of the 12 workshops (single choice).

All papers will be reviewed by the same program committee to ensure quality and consistency.

  • When submitting a full-length paper, one has to tell the program committee whether (a) you want your paper to be considered for the Main Track only, (b) allow your paper to be transferred to appropriate workshop if necessary, or (c) allow your paper to be transferred to appropriate workshop or the Work-in-Progress Track if necessary.
  • For a paper submitted to the Main Track, the Program Committee will decide whether a paper should be accepted by the Main Track or Workshops based on the quality of the paper.
  • For a paper submitted to a specific workshop, the Workshop Chair(s) will decide whether the paper be accepted or recommend to the Work-in-Progress Track for further consideration.
  • Papers not accepted by the Main Track or Workshops may be recommended to the Work-in-Progress track for further consideration.

Review Policy

IEEE Policy and professional ethics require that referees treat the contents of papers under review as privileged information not to be disclosed to others before publication. It is expected that no one with access to a paper under review will make any inappropriate use of the special knowledge, which that access provides. Contents of abstracts submitted to conference program committees should be regarded as privileged as well, and handled in the same manner. The Conference Publications Chair shall ensure that referees adhere to this practice.

Organizers of IEEE conferences are expected to provide an appropriate forum for the oral presentation and discussion of all accepted papers. An author, in offering a paper for presentation at an IEEE conference, or accepting an invitation to present a paper, is expected to be present at the meeting to deliver the paper. In the event that circumstances unknown at the time of submission of a paper preclude its presentation by an author, the program chair should be informed on time, and appropriate substitute arrangements should be made. In some cases it may help reduce no-shows for the Conference to require advance registration together with the submission of the final manuscript.
